The Cervlo R5 Red XPLR AXS 1 was built for one thing: reaching the summit first. But while mountain-top finishes get all the attention, they’re just part of the equation on race day. Descents might not win races, but they sure can lose them, and everything that goes up eventually comes down. The R5 handles technical descents and tight switchbacks with the same confidence it attacks steep gradients. This newest iteration maintains the razor-sharp handling and downhill composure that has made the R5 legendary.
This completely redesigned R5 frameset sheds an incredible 73g compared to the previous generation. The frame tips the scales at just 651g (size 56) while boosting stiffness in critical areas and improving compliance where riders need it most. Cervlo rethought every single component, razor-thin seat stays, sculpted tube profiles, and precision-engineered joints that eliminate excess material while maintaining rock-solid strength. The attention to detail extends everywhere: ditched brake adapters, refined fork construction, and optimized cable routing all add to the dramatic weight savings.
The standout innovation is the integrated one-piece handlebar and stem that alone saves 134g while borrowing wind-cheating design elements from the flagship S5. The geometry itself now mirrors the S5, creating an identical fit across both platforms for riders who want consistency between their climbing and aero setups. Engineering refinements like the new bearing cap design enable easy component changes without brake bleeding, and the direct-mount brake system works flawlessly with 160mm rotors.
The new R5 rides noticeably better thanks to 13% stiffer bottom bracket area for improved power delivery and 8% more forgiving head tube for enhanced comfort during long efforts. The repositioned bottom bracket perfectly suits 29c tires, unlocking better aerodynamics, improved grip, and reduced rolling resistance.
